I think it's all a matter of personal taste. Plus, DT is the Doctor at the moment (as well as having done multiple series) and so more attention is focused on him. I'd expect there to be a shift once the next guy comes around.
I like both CE and DT. They brought different things to the role that I enjoy. I enjoy Nine's laid-back, sarcastic demeanor, but I also enjoy Ten's hyper geek persona.
It's not that we dislike Tennant (we'd have stopped watching by now if that were the case); I suppose we simply prefer Eccleston's laid-back, sarcastic demeanor as you put it. I miss it terribly in fact.
I'll admit, it did take me a bit to warm up to DT. Early in S2 I thought he was too hyper for my tastes. But then he either calmed down a bit in late S2, or I got used to him. Now I really love his version.
But then he either calmed down a bit in late S2, or I got used to him.
I hope this will happen to me, too. At this point I feel like I can't bear to watch much more of his hyperactivity, but I haven't gotten very far yet. Still stuck at early season two because the BF forgot to bring the DVD's. Men.
That sounds a LOT like me. The first few episodes I wanted him to calm the hell down. :D
Thinking about it some more, I think he does settle into the role as the season goes on. Still intense and bouncy, but less spazzy. Could be because some more serious things start happening around mid-series, and so he does start getting into those quieter moments.
I loved the sarcasm of CE (no surprises there), but after a while his endless gurning got on my nerves (it wouldn't have been so bad if Billie Piper hadn't had a similar fixed facial expression throughout the first series as well).
DT made the Doctor a lovable geek, which was nice, but that also got slightly wearing after a while. He got to play the role for a lot longer, so his Doctor had more opportunity to develop. Sometimes, when DT is bouncing all over the screen like a kid on a sugar high, I really miss CE's sarcasm and rather pessimistic outlook (although he did his fair share of bouncing too). My main disappointment with DT is that he didn't keep his Scottish accent (and Captain Jack too)! After all, if lots of planets have a North (according to Nine), then surely some planets have a Scotland?
In conclusion, I like them both for various reasons :) It'll be interesting to see how the next guy's Doctor behaves.
So how far have you got with Doctor Who?? And have you watched any Torchwood?
Mark this day. Apparently, we're capable of having individual thoughts. Who would have thought? *g*
Seriously though, I'm a bit surprised because the BF and I watched season one in three days (not consecutive) and we found CE's grin to be quite charming. It was part of his personality as The Doctor and I thought it fit quite well with his sarcasm.
We've only watched a couple of early season two episodes so far. There's still hope for me growing to really like DT, although I'm not sure I'll ever get used to his hyperactivity. Does he mellow if only a bit? I certainly hope so.
Haven't watched Torchwood yet, but I'm getting there. Must watch Hyperdrive first, though. ;)
I actually like both CE and DT as the Doctor. They're great in their own ways and truth be told, I couldn't decide which one I liked more. *shrugs* DT is just more familiar to me, because he played the part longer than CE and I absolutely adored his chemistry with Donna. *sniff* Going to miss her terribly.
Torchwood started on German tv last week. (Wed 22:05 RTLII >> Caff, go watch it, if you don't already know it!). JB's German voice isn't too bad, I think. Maybe I'll try to catch the second epi tonight.
Hehe, it's great, isn't it? I love the bad acting and trashy writing. Watched it on German tv last Wed and it was ok for a translation, but I still prefer the original. :D
Woot! Another Eccleston fan. I like Tennant fine, but Eccleston was brilliant. He made the role his own -- no mean feat when he was such a radical and strange choice for it.
I never watched the old show (though I've watched some now), so Eccleston was my first Doctor, and he really sold me. It's truly a shame he only stuck around for one season. If you want to see more of him, check out Heroes' first season (which is worth doing anyway).
