I really, really hate investing time into reading a story that is off to a very promising start only to jar me right out of it with a sudden change in characterization that I can't appreciate.

Of course it had to happen round about chapter 21, at about 20,000 words in.

*goes off ranting to herself*

Ouch! That's pretty bad, huh? I totally hate when that happens. Makes me want to whip the author for good. *lol*
Which fandom was it, btw?

It sucks royally, trust me. It was a DH fanfic which, if you will remember, are hard to come by in the first place. So imagine my delight when I found this 80,000 word epic, which sounded really good. And it was - for the first 19,999 words. She created a very enjoyable and believable original character. So, why oh why, did she have to screw up established DH characters in the process? *sniffles*

Nope, not J/C at all - or Trek, for that matter. You're safe. ;)

Aww, bummer. I hate that!

Don't we all...

Oh my God, yes. There's a QAF series that everyonein the fandom raves over. It's really good, really enjoyable, quite long...and then in the VERY LAST CHAPTER the author ruins it all with a stupid, stupid, out of character and cheesily romantic ending. Argh.

Okay, you've got me beat. I'd probably be ranting for days - to myself, to others, to the author - if that ever happened to me. Yesterday was bad enough, but to be screwed over in the very last chapter... inconceivable. ^^
